The moon is out. The leaves are orange and gold; pumpkins grin from doorsteps. But at the Hallelujah House fall carnival, tour guide Sandy Howell reassured kids and families: "There's nothing scary here."
No tricks, but only treats awaited the crowd that had gathered for the 10th annual fall carnival hosted by World Hope Worship Center on Mooresville Road.
As a testament to its popularity, more than 200 people walked through the gates in the first half hour they were open. "For the first night, that's great," Associate Pastor Mike Smith said. Smith helps coordinate the event along with about 100 volunteers, mostly church members.
The three-night festival is billed as a safe, family-friendly alternative to Halloween trick-or-treating. "We've got games, candy, bounce houses, food and fun," Smith said.
Part of the event's appeal is its low cost. Admission, games and treats are free; food, including hot dogs and lemonade, is sold for a modest fee.
Nancy Hall brought sons Dillon, 6, and Michael, 11. "We always come here to the church and do this," she said. "It's good for the kids." Dillon and Michael had just traded in their scorecards, full of points earned playing games, and picked florescent glowsticks from the prize table.

After his mother’s 2007 extramarital affair, Travis Cordial said he didn’t know who he could trust.
Now, as a youth pastor at World Hope Worship Center, Cordial is doing what he can to raise awareness for children of divorced parents.
Cordial, and fellow youth pastor Paul Silvas, are walking 115 miles from their church in Salisbury to King and back, as part of Cordial’s organization, This Is Our Shout Out.
Churches across Rowan County are invited to join together for an afternoon of live music, guest speakers, drama and dance in a safe and fun festival atmosphere that will include carnival games, inflatables, food vendors and craft vendors.
For the Salisbury Post Wednesday, April 27, 2011, was a day consumed by EF4 and EF5 tornados barreling through the South, reducing immaculate lawns and landscape to what amounted to nothing more than dry, dusty, barren land. That day has come to be known as the deadliest tornado outbreak since 1932.
Driving to areas west of Birmingham, Alabama and seeing the damage first-hand made me wonder what kind of effect the storm had, not only on the families who endured the tornado’s wrath, but also those who survived, untouched. I wondered what people were thinking as the tornado approached, heading straight for them. I wondered, with such widespread wreckage, could I help and would my help make a difference at all?
On June 20, the Alabama Care Team from World Hope Worship Center — 14 adults and youth, from 15 to 58 years of age — loaded into vans and made the nine-hour trip to join me in Birmingham. The plan was to serve wherever help was needed: clearing debris from homesites, organizing food pantries and supplies, building storage shelving for a relief center, talking to and praying with the families in Pleasant Grove and Cordova.
